Intercultural Sport Series

    Recreation, Indigenous Programs & Services, and the Global Engagement Office, together with SUO Clubs and community partners are teaming up to offer a series of cultural sport events that welcome domestic and international students to participate in and learn about intercultural sports. Students will be able to individually register for as many events as they wish to learn the foundational skills of these sports while having fun with their friends and creating new ones. No experience or equipment required for any event.

    Students are encouraged to attend two or more events to expand their knowledge and experience and to automatically be entered to win the GRAND PRIZE of a Heat Hoodie, Pendleton Towel and more!

    All participants will need to show their fully vaccinated BC Vaccine Card for participation.

Join Viviana, professional dancer and instructor and the Latin America Students’ Organization (LASO) as they lead Latin Dance classes. They teach salsa, bachata, chachacha, son, among other Latin rhythms. No experience or partner required. Sport shoes recommended.

Location: Toshido Mixed Martial Arts 360 Spedding Court, Unit#3, Kelowna BC

Cost: $5 – registration fees donated back to student club

Join David Lea and Toshido Mixed Martial Arts to learn the art of Muay Thai. Participants are welcome to bring their own gloves and shin pads, but not required. Transportation not included. City Bus Route #8 leaving from UBCO will drop off closest to the location.

Okanagan Nation Alliance

Traditional indigenous games

November 29 3-5pm 

Location: Nonis Field

Cost: $5 – registration fees donated back to student club

Join Nick, UBC Okanagan alumnus, and the Okanagan Nation Alliance Traditional Game Coordinator as he leads traditional Indigenous games. This workshop offers an opportunity for students to learn about Syilx-rooted traditional games. Find out how traditional games were an integral part of ancestral ways of life. Students will learn the history, values and purposes of the games. No experience or equipment required. Dress for the weather and wear gloves.

Join in teams of four to six for a soccer game night with the Muslim Students’ Association. Games will be focused on playing for fun. There will be a maximum of 8 teams with games being 30 minutes long.

December 1 8:00-10:00pm 

Location: Gymnasium

Cost: $5 – registration fees donated back to student club

Join in teams of three for a 3 on 3 basketball game night with the Filipino Student Association scorekeeping the games and Heat Varsity Basketball players officiating. Games will be focused on playing for fun. There will be a maximum of 12 teams with games being 15 minutes long.
